Historically Caton Haigh noted that White-fronted Geese were almost unknown on the north-east coast until 1917, after which they became regular winter visitors. They are usually of the nominate European (Russian) race A. a. albifrons. The Greenland race, A. a. flavirostris, is much rarer and was first noted December 5th 1950 at Croft Marsh, Gibraltar Point but it has always been a very irregular visitor. Since the late 1990s it has retained its status as a rare visitor with records of single coastal birds in six years to 2019, the exceptions being a flock of six at Alkborough Flats and nearby Whitton Sands January-February 2012, three at Marston STW November-December 2015 and two Theddlethorpe St. Helen January 2016.
