Humiliated herring gull had to be put down by vet because of its distress

This distressing photo has appeared on social media and in the Lancashire press. The stricken bird was rescued, but it was in so much discomfort that it had to be put down by a vet. The incident occurred at Bispham, near Blackpool, and has sparked a flurry of comment - much of it antagonistic, alas, to gulls. How can some people be so cruel!
