They do it all the time at Brancaster Staithe in Norfolk where there are large mussel piles put there by the local mussel collectors

This morning I watched a herring gull in Sainsbury's car park.  It had found some mussels (Goodness knows where from!) and was flying up to 10 or 12 feet before dropping them on to the hard surface to smash the shells. After 2 or 3 drops, it could get at the flesh.
I was just getting my phone out to video it when it decided it had done enough and flew off!
I know this type of behaviour has been recorded in other birds, including crows, but has it been observed/recorded in herring gulls?
